When to get your air ducts cleaned
Air ducts are some of the most important components of your HVAC system. Simply put – if they’re not clean or working properly, it can cost you a lot – out of your wallet and your overall health and peace of mind.
Keeping your ducts clean is crucial to both your quality of life and your wallet, so that’s why we’re here today. Here are four reasons you should get your ducts cleaned as soon as possible. Let’s jump right in!
Mold is flat-out dangerous and while we’d love to tell you otherwise, air ducts often makes an ideal home for the growth and spread of it. The best way to check for mold is to simply remove a grill on at least one of your vents and use a flashlight to peak in. If you don’t see the mold, chances are that you will smell it. And if you smell it, not only does it need to go, but there’s a strong chance there’s moisture in the duct work and you’ll have to check for leaks.
Dampers to HVAC are like drains to plumbing. They control the overall flow of warm and cold air that seeps into a room. Because of the way they’re built, dampers can malfunction easily. Dust gets into the bevvy of moving parts; limiting their movement to the point where they become unresponsive to thermostats. Damper issues are almost always directly related to some sort of duct issue.
Because of the nature of ducts, they tend to become prime breeding ground for pests, dust mites and the like. The danger they pose is obvious, but from an ‘issue’ standpoint – they’re way up the list.
Pests can get in through vents, but they can also get into the system from holes in the duct work, broken seems and the like. You’ll need an HVAC repairman for sure, but you’ll also need to call a pest pro to make sure they’re properly exterminated and removed.
While some of the other problems on this list represent problems that could pose potential health risks, and inefficient system will have more of an impact on your wallet than anything else. More often than not – if a problem is left unchecked within the system, then it has the potential to become a huge issue. Make sure you’re bringing in someone to perform regular maintenance on your HVAC system. Trust us – you won’t regret it. They’ll nip emerging problems in the bud before they become something significant.
