The spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays, beautiful Dunedin, Florida, has been called one of the Tampa Bay’s area’s best-kept secrets by Coastal Living magazine. Whether you’ve lived in Dunedin for years or are just coming to the area for the first time, you’re sure to find plenty to keep you busy.
Area History & Geography
Dunedin was first founded in the 19th century by immigrants who had come from Scotland. They named the city after the original name of their home nation’s capital, Edinburgh. Dunedin was first incorporated in 1899 and was reincorporated in 1925 as the City of Dunedin. The area enjoyed strong growth thanks to its importance as a port city. Since the mid-20th century, Dunedin’s economy has become increasingly focused on tourism.
Dunedin is situated in the northern part of Pinellas County along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The city is bounded to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the east and south by the city of Clearwater, and to the north by Palm Harbor. Dunedin is about 30 minutes west of Tampa Bay. Residents and visitors can access the Tampa area using US-60, US-580 and I-275.
The Local Residents
Dunedin is home to nearly 36,000 residents, about a third of whom are of retirement age. Most of the city’s working-age residents are employed in tourism and private industry. Thanks to its metropolitan location, Dunedin enjoys excellent cultural and ethnic diversity.
Culture, Attractions and Diversions
Thanks to its location along Florida’s beautiful Gulf Coast, Dunedin boasts a wide variety of attractions that will delight residents and visitors alike. Those who are interested in the arts can visit the Dunedin Fine Art Center, which boasts four galleries and a wide variety of classes designed for individuals of all ages and experience levels. A wide variety of special events including festivals, art shows and concerts are also held in the community throughout the year. Of course, those who prefer to wander the city streets and do shopping can enjoy the relaxing pace of Downtown Dunedin, where many small boutiques await.
Of course, Dunedin also offers a wealth of activities for those who love the outdoors. The city is home to an excellent parks and recreation system that includes public parks, walking trails and campsites. The nearby Honeymoon Island State Park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike who want to take in gorgeous scenery and see one of Florida’s last slash pine forests, while Caladesi Island State Park is a favorite among families who want to enjoy recreation time on the beach. During spring training, residents can also catch fun, fast-paced MLB action in their own backyards.
Local Weather & Climate Conditions
As is typical along the Gulf Coast, Dunedin enjoys moderate-to-warm winters and warm-to-hot summers with high humidity levels throughout the spring and summer months. Most home and business owners work with an air conditioning service company to ensure that their spaces are comfortably cool. Visitors who aren’t accustomed to conditions in the area should stay in cool, air conditioned spaces during hot afternoons.
